VMA Winner Chappell Roan Yells at Red Carpet Photographer to ‘Shut the F*ck Up’

Chappell Roan clashed with a photographer at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

As Roan posed for photos on the red carpet Wednesday night, the pop star got into a heated exchange with a photographer who yelled, “Shut the fuck up.”

She immediately turned around, pointed her finger at the photographer after the rude comment was made and responded, “Shut up.”

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer added, “Don’t do it! Not me, b**ch!” A voice can be heard in the background encouraging her, saying, “Tell ’em, girl!”

The 26-year-old later explained what happened during the tense encounter.

“It’s quite upsetting and quite scary. For someone who gets a lot of anxiety when people yell at you, the carpet is horrible and I yelled back. You have no right to yell at me like that.”

“It’s pretty upsetting and pretty scary,” Roan told Entertainment Tonight. “For someone who gets a lot of anxiety when people yell at you, the carpet is horrible and I yelled back. You have no right to yell at me like that.”

On the red carpet, Roan wore a sheer burgundy dress. Her medieval-inspired look included a sword, a light green cape, a large cross necklace, and long, pointed nails.

During the show, she performed her hit single “Good Luck, Babe!” and won the award for Best New Artist.

“I just have to make it clear and remind you: Women don’t owe you anything,” she added. “I chose this career because I love music and art and because I want to honor my inner child. I don’t accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path and I don’t deserve it.”

Roan addressed fans after receiving “non-consensual physical and social interactions.”

The singer drew a fine line in her statement after highlighting “predatory behavior,” which she said is “disguised as ‘superfan’ behavior.”

“There’s always more to the story, I’m scared and I’m tired. And please don’t call me Kayleigh,” she added, referring to her legal first name. “I feel more love than I’ve ever felt in my life. I feel safer than I’ve ever felt in my life.”

The “Casual” singer became a megastar after her performance at Coachella in 2024 went viral. The pop star has 4 million followers on Instagram and an additional 3 million on TikTok.
